What to Bring for Your Pico Austria Hike
Warm Layers
Temperatures at high altitude can be cold and windy, especially in the early morning and near the summit. Bring a warm base layer, insulating mid-layer, and a windproof or waterproof outer layer.
Sturdy Hiking Boots
Good hiking boots with ankle support are essential. The trail is rocky and uneven, and solid footwear will help with stability and comfort.
Sun Protection
The sun is very strong at high altitude. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses with UV protection, and a hat to protect yourself throughout the day.
Daypack
A small backpack to carry your water, snacks, extra layers, and personal items during the hike.
Water Bottle or Hydration System
Staying hydrated is critical at altitude. We recommend bringing at least 1.5–2 liters of water.
Gloves and Warm Hat
Even on sunny days, it can be very cold near the summit. Gloves and a beanie are strongly recommended.
Snacks
While we provide snacks, you’re welcome to bring your own favorites for extra energy during the hike.
Personal Medications
Bring any personal medications you may need, including altitude sickness medication if prescribed by your doctor.
Camera or Phone
You’ll want something to capture the incredible panoramic views from the summit.

What to Know Before You Go
Altitude Awareness
Pico Austria reaches an elevation of 5,350 meters (17,552 feet), making altitude one of the biggest challenges of this hike. Proper acclimatization is essential. We strongly recommend spending at least 2–3 days in La Paz or another high-altitude area before attempting the summit.
Physical Preparation
This hike is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude and sustained uphill sections. You should be comfortable hiking for several hours on steep, rocky terrain at high elevation. Good fitness will greatly improve your experience.
Weather Conditions
Weather in the Cordillera Real can change quickly. Expect cold temperatures, strong winds, and intense sun exposure, especially near the summit. Even on clear days, conditions can feel harsh at this altitude.
Early Start
The day begins early with a 6:00 a.m. pickup to take advantage of clearer morning weather and give us ample time to reach the summit safely. Be prepared for a full day in the mountains.
Eco-Friendly Practices
Help us protect this fragile high-altitude environment by carrying out all trash, staying on established trails, and respecting local landscapes and wildlife throughout the hike.
Experience the Wonder
of Pico Austria!
Your day begins early as we pick you up from your La Paz hotel at 6:00 a.m. and set off on a scenic 2‑ to 2.5‑hour drive toward the Condoriri / La Rinconada area of the Cordillera Real. We’ll cross high Andean landscapes and traditional villages before reaching the trailhead near 4,500 meters (14,764 ft) above sea level.
Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a light breakfast and prepare for the trek ahead. The trail begins with a gentle ascent across high‑altitude valley terrain, passing small lakes and wide alpine views as you gain your first taste of Bolivia’s rugged mountains. After about 1 hour of hiking, we arrive at Laguna Chiar Khota (4,650 m / 15,256 ft) — a stunning high‑altitude lake that serves as a natural rest point and a perfect spot for photos.
From there, the route becomes steeper as we climb toward Austria Pass (~5,150 m / 16,896 ft) and continue on to the summit of Pico Austria (5,350 m / 17,552 ft). The uphill effort of roughly 3–4 hours is rewarded with breathtaking 360° panoramic views of the Cordillera Real, including the snow‑capped peaks of Condoriri, Huayna Potosí, and distant Lake Titicaca on clear days.
At the summit, you’ll have time to rest, take photos, and enjoy a simple lunch with views like no other. After soaking in the panorama, we begin our descent via the same route, returning to the trailhead in approximately 2 hours. Once back at the vehicle, we’ll start the drive to La Paz, arriving in the late afternoon with memories of an epic high‑Andean trek.
