Seven Lakes of Ausangate on Horseback
Everything you Need to Know:
Your Ultimate Guide to the 7 Lakes Ausangate Adventure
How long is the 7 Lakes Ausangate Horseback Tour?
The hike is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) round trip, depending on the exact route. It typically takes 4 to 6 hours, including breaks to soak in the stunning views and capture amazing photos.
How difficult is the tour?
The tour is considered easy mainly due to being on horseback. Keep in mind that the trail reaches up to 4,700 meters (15,400 feet). However, the trail itself is manageable with basic fitness and a good pace.
What is the best time to do the tour?
The best time to hike is during the dry season, from May to September, when the weather is clear, and the views are breathtaking. Avoid the rainy season (November to March) as trails can get slippery.
Do I need to acclimatize before the tour?
Yes! Since the hike is at high altitude, spending at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or nearby areas is highly recommended to avoid altitude sickness.
What should I bring?
Pack essentials like:
-
Warm clothing (layers, gloves, and a hat)
-
Comfortable hiking boots for rocky terrain
-
Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat)
-
Snacks and water to stay fueled and hydrated
-
Rain gear in case of sudden weather changes
-
A camera to capture the breathtaking turquoise lakes and snow-capped peaks!
Can I do the tour on my own or do I need a guide?
While it’s possible to go independently, hiring a local guide or joining a tour is highly recommended. They’ll ensure you stay on track, share fascinating cultural and environmental insights, and provide support for any altitude-related issues.
Are there bathroom or food facilities on the trail?
There are no permanent facilities along the trail, so it’s best to come prepared with your own snacks, water, and any other essentials. Some tours may include meals, so check with your provider.
What makes the 7 Lakes tour special?
This hike offers an unparalleled experience, taking you past seven stunning glacial lakes, surrounded by the awe-inspiring Ausangate mountain range. The vivid turquoise waters and pristine landscapes make it a truly unforgettable adventure!

Ausangate On Horseback
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 3:00 AM and begin our journey toward the village of Pacchanta. The drive takes approximately two hours on a paved road, followed by another hour along a rugged mountain track as we approach the base of the snowcapped Ausangate Massif. Pacchanta, located at 4,200 meters (13,780 ft), is a traditional high-Andean community surrounded by wide puna grasslands and glacial valleys.
Upon arrival around 7:30 AM, we’ll enjoy a healthy breakfast while meeting our local horsemen and being paired with our horses. After a brief safety orientation and riding introduction, we’ll begin our horseback journey into the heart of the Andes, following scenic trails that form a full circuit through the Seven Lakes of Ausangate.
The route starts with a gradual ascent across open high-altitude plains before climbing steadily toward the upper glacial basins. Along the way, llamas and alpacas graze freely, and local residents can be seen moving through the landscape in traditional attire. After approximately 1.5 hours of riding, we’ll reach Azulcocha, the first of the lakes, famous for its intense blue color fed by glacial meltwater.
Continuing the circuit, the trail leads to Comercocha and Tikacocha, two striking high-altitude lagoons set beneath hanging glaciers and rugged ridgelines. These quieter sections of the route offer expansive views of the Ausangate Glacier and surrounding peaks, with excellent opportunities for photography and short stops to take in the scale of the landscape. We then ride onward to the remaining lakes, each displaying its own unique оттен—ranging from deep turquoise to milky green—shaped by minerals, ice, and light.
After completing the full loop, we’ll descend back toward Pacchanta, closing the circuit with sweeping views of the valley below. Back in the village, you’ll have time to relax in the natural hot springs at the foot of Ausangate before enjoying a well-earned lunch.
In the afternoon, we’ll begin our return journey to Cusco, arriving in the evening and bringing this unforgettable horseback adventure in the Peruvian Andes to a close.
