Prepare for an Unforgettable Adventure:
What to Know Before You Go
Altitude Awareness: Nevado Mateo reaches an elevation of 5,150 meters (16,896 feet), so proper acclimatization is essential. We strongly recommend spending at least 2–3 days in Huaraz before the climb to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
Physical Preparation: This climb is considered moderately challenging. Being in good physical condition and comfortable with steady uphill movement at high altitude will greatly enhance your experience.
Weather Conditions: Mountain weather in the Cordillera Blanca can change rapidly. Expect cold temperatures, wind, and the possibility of snow, especially near the summit—even on clear days.
Early Start: The day begins very early to take advantage of stable snow conditions and safer glacier travel. Be prepared for a pre-dawn pickup and a long but rewarding day in the mountains.
Eco-Friendly Practices: Help us protect this fragile alpine environment by carrying out all trash, respecting the glacier and surrounding terrain, and minimizing your impact throughout the climb.
Experience the Magic
of Nevado Mateo!
Your journey begins before dawn as we pick you up from your hotel in Huaraz around 2:00 a.m. and set off on a scenic drive through the heart of the Cordillera Blanca. After approximately 3 hours, we arrive at the Punta Olímpica Tunnel (4,730 m / 15,518 ft), where we’ll enjoy a light breakfast and prepare our mountaineering equipment.
From the trailhead, we begin our ascent across rocky moraine terrain toward the glacier. As daylight breaks, you’ll be surrounded by dramatic Andean peaks and sweeping alpine views. Upon reaching the glacier, your guide will assist with crampons, ice axe, and rope systems, and provide a brief refresher on glacier travel techniques.
The climb continues steadily up snow and ice to the summit of Nevado Mateo (5,150 m / 16,896 ft). From the top, take in breathtaking panoramic views of iconic peaks such as Huascarán, Chopicalqui, and Contrahierbas—a powerful and rewarding moment, especially as your first 5,000-meter summit.
After time on the summit for photos and rest, we carefully descend the same route, returning to the trailhead. We will then stop for a quick lunch on us. We’ll then drive back to Huaraz, arriving in the afternoon with memories of an unforgettable high-altitude adventure.
