What to Know Before You Go
Altitude Awareness
Tungurahua’s summit stands at an impressive 5,016 meters (16,456 feet), which means altitude sickness is a real possibility if you're not prepared. We strongly recommend spending at least two days acclimating in Baños or other nearby high-altitude towns before attempting the climb. Giving your body time to adjust will make your summit experience safer and way more enjoyable.
Physical Preparation
The hike is considered moderately challenging, so being in good physical condition will enhance your experience.
Weather Conditions
The weather in the Andes can be unpredictable. Be prepared for sunny skies, chilly winds, and possible rain—even all in one day.
Very Early Start
The day begins at midnight, so be ready for an early wake-up call and prepare to embrace the stunning sunrise views along the journey.
Eco-Friendly Practices
Help us protect this beautiful region by carrying out all trash and minimizing your environmental footprint during the hike.
Experience the Magic of Tungurahua
on a Two-Day Adventure!
Your journey begins in Baños before dawn as we drive to the Pondoa trailhead, located at 10,826 feet (3,300 meters). After a quick briefing and a light breakfast, we’ll begin our ascent through dense Andean cloud forests, gradually transitioning into paramo grasslands as we climb higher up the slopes of Tungurahua.
The trail steadily gains elevation as we push towards the Tungurahua Refuge at 12,959 feet (3,950 meters). This section takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, offering stunning views of Baños, the Pastaza Valley, and distant peaks like Chimborazo and Carihuairazo. At the refuge, we’ll take a well-deserved break, refueling with snacks and preparing for the more challenging final ascent.
Leaving the refuge behind, we tackle Tungurahua’s steep volcanic slopes, navigating loose rock and high-altitude terrain as we climb toward the summit at 16,480 feet (5,023 meters). This is the most demanding section of the trek, requiring determination and steady pacing. Reaching the top, you’ll stand at the edge of Tungurahua’s crater, with breathtaking views of the Ecuadorian Andes stretching in every direction. If conditions allow, you may even see traces of volcanic steam rising from the depths below.
After celebrating our summit achievement and taking in the unparalleled scenery, we begin our descent back to Pondoa, retracing our steps past the refuge. The return journey takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, offering time to appreciate the changing landscapes as we descend into the lush lowlands.
Back at the trailhead, a well-earned meal awaits before we drive back to Baños, arriving in the late afternoon—just in time to relax in the town’s famous thermal baths or enjoy a celebratory meal.

FAQs: Your Questions Answered
About the Tungurahua Hike
How difficult is the Tungurahua summit trek?
This is a challenging two-day trek meant for hikers with good physical fitness. The trail is steep, rugged, and includes a summit push that reaches over 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). You’ll gain significant elevation over two days, sleep at a rustic high-altitude hut, and start your summit attempt early the next morning. It’s tough — but incredibly rewarding.
How high is the summit of Tungurahua?
The summit sits at 5,016 meters (16,456 feet). At this altitude, the air is thin, and the hike becomes more physically demanding. Proper acclimatization is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
Do I need to be acclimated before the hike?
Yes. We strongly recommend spending at least two days in Baños or another high-altitude area before your trek. Acclimating will help reduce the risk of altitude sickness and make your summit attempt more manageable. If you're concerned, speak with your doctor beforehand or consider bringing altitude sickness medication.
Where do we sleep during the hike?
You'll stay overnight in a high-altitude mountain hut near the base of the volcano. It’s a rustic but cozy shelter where you can rest, eat, and prepare for the next day's summit. Sleeping bags and mats are provided, but feel free to bring your own for extra comfort.
Are meals included?
Yes — we provide all meals during the trek, including lunch and dinner on Day 1, and breakfast after the summit. Meals are hearty and high in energy, perfect for trekking. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice.
What should I pack for this hike?
You’ll want to dress in layers and bring warm clothing — temperatures can drop below freezing near the summit. A windproof jacket, gloves, hat, hiking boots, headlamp, and a change of socks are must-haves. We’ll send you a full packing list after booking.
Is there a restroom at the hut?
There is a basic, shared toilet at the hut. There are no restrooms along the trail, so be prepared to go in nature if needed during the hike itself.
Is there an option to ride a horse instead of hiking?
Unlike more touristic trails, there are no horses available on this route — the terrain is too steep and remote. Everyone hikes the full trail, so being physically prepared is key.
When is the best time to Hike Tungurahua?
The dry season, from June to September, offers the best weather for summiting, with clearer skies and more stable conditions. That said, it’s possible to hike year-round — just bring rain gear during the wetter months.
What happens if I cannot complete the hike?
Your guide is trained to monitor your condition and support you throughout the climb. If you feel unwell or unable to continue, they’ll help you descend safely or stay back at the hut while the rest of the group continues.
Are entrance fees included in the hike?
Yes — all entrance or access fees for the Tungurahua trail and protected area are included in the price of the tour. No need to bring extra cash for this part of the experience.
Is this trek suitable for beginners?
This trek is not recommended for beginners or those new to high-altitude hiking. It requires a good level of physical conditioning and previous trekking experience. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, feel free to reach out and we’ll help you decide.
Can I bring children on the hike?
Due to the difficulty and altitude, this trek is only suitable for older teens with trekking experience and strong physical fitness. It’s not advised for younger kids.
