Cuicocha Day Hike
What to Bring:
Your Cuicocha Adventure Checklist
Layered Clothing
Cuicocha’s weather can shift quickly. Wear a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof jacket to stay comfortable from chilly mornings to warm afternoons.
Sturdy Hiking Boots
The trail around the crater includes dirt paths, rocky sections, and occasional steep inclines. Good hiking boots with ankle support and traction are a must.
Daypack
Bring a small, comfortable backpack to carry essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and extra layers.
Water & Snacks
Hydration is key at high altitude. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water and some energy-boosting snacks like nuts, granola bars, or fruit.
Sun Protection
At over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), the sun is intense. Sunglasses, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential for protecting your skin and eyes.
Gloves & Hat
Mornings and exposed ridges can be chilly, especially with strong winds. A lightweight beanie and gloves will help keep you warm.
Trekking Poles (Optional)
The trail has some uneven terrain and elevation changes. Trekking poles can provide extra stability and support.
Cash for Extras
If you’re interested in taking a boat ride on the lagoon or purchasing local crafts, bring some cash (small bills).
Camera or Phone
Cuicocha’s crater lake is one of Ecuador’s most stunning landscapes. Make sure your phone is fully charged or bring a camera to capture the breathtaking views.
Sense of Adventure
This is more than just a hike—it’s an opportunity to explore a volcanic crater, witness incredible scenery, and immerse yourself in the Andes. Bring your enthusiasm, curiosity, and adventurous spirit!
Know Before You Go:
Your Cuicocha Lagoon Adventure Guide
Altitude Awareness
Cuicocha sits at 3,068 meters (10,065 feet) above sea level, so the air is thinner, and you might notice the effects of altitude. Take it easy, stay hydrated, and consider acclimating in Quito beforehand if you're not used to higher elevations.
Weather & What to Wear
The Andean climate can be unpredictable—chilly mornings, warm midday sun, and occasional strong winds. Dress in layers, wear a windproof jacket, and don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect against the high-altitude sun.
Trail Conditions
The trail around Cuicocha’s rim is well-defined but includes some rocky sections and moderate inclines. Expect a mix of dirt paths, loose gravel, and exposed ridges with incredible panoramic views. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are highly recommended.
Optional Boat Ride
For a different perspective of Cuicocha, you can take a boat ride across the lagoon, weaving through the crater’s islets while learning about the volcanic history of the area. Bring cash if you’d like to add this relaxing water experience to your adventure.
Food & Hydration
A good meal is included after the hike, but make sure to carry plenty of water and light snacks to keep your energy up along the way. Hydration is key, especially at altitude.
Camera Ready
This is one of Ecuador’s most photogenic spots. From dramatic crater views to the shimmering blue-green lagoon, every step of the trail is a photo opportunity. Charge your phone or bring a camera—you won’t want to miss capturing the magic.
Adventure Spirit Required
This isn’t just a walk in the park—it’s a scenic and rewarding trek. Whether you’re hiking the rim, cruising on the lake, or soaking in the highland views, bring your sense of adventure and get ready for an unforgettable experience.
Day 1: Quito – Cuicocha Lagoon – Quito
We will pick you up from your hotel in Quito early in the morning and set out on a scenic drive through the rolling Andean highlands, passing charming indigenous villages and breathtaking mountain landscapes. After about two hours, we will arrive at Cuicocha Lagoon, a stunning volcanic crater lake located at the base of Cotacachi Volcano.
Our hike begins along the crater’s rim, offering spectacular panoramic views of the deep blue waters and the two lush islands formed by past eruptions. The trail winds through páramo grasslands and Andean forests, with moderate ascents and descents providing the perfect mix of challenge and reward. Along the way, you’ll witness incredible biodiversity, from vibrant high-altitude flowers to soaring Andean condors.
For those looking to enhance their experience, there will be time to descend closer to the water’s edge, adding an extra challenge with 335 meters (1,100 feet) of elevation gain and 2 km (1.25 miles) of extra hiking. Once at the lake, you can soak in the serene beauty of this sacred site before making the return ascent.
After finishing the trek, we’ll enjoy a well-earned meal at a local restaurant before heading back to Quito, ending a day filled with adventure, culture, and breathtaking views.
