3 Day Ingapirca Ruins Trek
What to Bring:
Your Ingapirca Trail Trek Checklist
Layered Clothing
Andean weather can shift quickly from sunny and warm to cold and rainy. Wear a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer (such as fleece or down), and a waterproof, windproof outer shell to stay comfortable in varying conditions.
Hiking Boots
Sturdy, well-broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support and a strong grip are essential for tackling rugged terrain, muddy trails, and river crossings.
Backpack
A comfortable 30–40L backpack is ideal for carrying daily essentials such as water, snacks, extra layers, and personal items.
Hat & Gloves
A warm hat and gloves will keep you comfortable in cold morning and evening temperatures, while a wide-brim hat or cap provides sun protection during the day.
Water & High-Energy Snacks
Hydration is key at high altitudes. Bring at least 2 liters of water per day, plus high-energy snacks like trail mix, chocolate, and protein bars to keep your energy levels up.
Sleeping Bag (Optional)
For overnight camping, a sleeping bag rated for cold temperatures (0°C/32°F or lower) is recommended. Rentals can be arranged if needed.
Sunglasses & Sunscreen
The sun at high altitude is intense. Bring UV-protection sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin and eyes.
Headlamp with Extra Batteries
Early morning starts and nights at camp require reliable lighting—bring a headlamp with spare batteries.
Personal Items & First Aid
Include personal medications, basic first aid supplies, lip balm, and insect repellent for added comfort and safety.
Cash for Extras
If you plan to buy souvenirs, tip your guide, or purchase extra snacks along the way, bring cash in small bills.
Camera or Phone
Capture stunning landscapes, Inca ruins, and high-altitude vistas—but keep electronics in a dry bag to protect them from rain and moisture.
Sense of Adventure
This trek is more than a hike—it’s a journey through Ecuador’s history, breathtaking landscapes, and ancient Inca pathways. Bring an open mind, a strong spirit, and a readiness to embrace the adventure!
Know Before You Go:
Your Ingapirca Trail Trek Guide
Altitude Awareness
The Ingapirca Trail reaches elevations of over 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) before descending to the famous Inca ruins. While lower than Ecuador’s highest peaks, the altitude can still be challenging. Spend at least a day in Cuenca or a similar elevation beforehand to acclimate, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. If you’re prone to altitude sickness, consider taking altitude medication or scheduling an extra acclimatization hike.
Weather & What to Wear
The Andean highlands experience unpredictable weather, ranging from sunny skies to sudden rain and cold winds. Layering is key—wear moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or down jacket, a waterproof shell, and durable trekking pants. A hat, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential for sun and wind protection.
Trail Conditions & Difficulty
This multi-day trek follows ancient Inca pathways through páramo grasslands, rugged mountain passes, and remote high-altitude valleys. Expect uneven trails, muddy sections, and river crossings, requiring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support. While the trek is non-technical, endurance is needed for long hiking days and elevation changes.
Daily Trekking Routine
Each day involves 5–8 hours of trekking, with breaks to take in the scenery and learn about the historical significance of the route. Campsites are set in remote Andean landscapes, offering a serene and immersive experience in nature.
Hydration & Nutrition
Staying hydrated at altitude is crucial. We provide purified water and hot drinks at camp, but bringing a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder is recommended. Meals are provided throughout the trek, but high-energy snacks like nuts, energy bars, and chocolate will help keep you fueled on the trail.
Required Gear
Tents, sleeping mats, and cooking equipment are included, but personal trekking essentials such as a backpack, sleeping bag, warm layers, and a rain jacket are not. Gear rentals can be arranged upon request.
Camera Ready
Capture stunning Andean landscapes, ancient Inca sites, and the breathtaking moment you arrive at Ingapirca. A camera or phone with a power bank will ensure you don’t miss a single shot.
Adventure Spirit Required
This trek isn’t just about reaching Ingapirca—it’s about experiencing the journey through Ecuador’s ancient Inca trails, breathtaking landscapes, and rich history. Be ready for an unforgettable adventure filled with culture, nature, and exploration.
